Ear and play

Practice musical dictation

Adimuse/Ear-and-play : Practice musical dictation

 Project genesis

One day, during my first year of clarinet, my teacher asked me to reproduce the notes he was playing by masking his fingering. Even though he limited himself to the notes I knew well, the exercise still seemed difficult to me.

To progress faster, I tried to practice at home. But on my own the exercise is not feasible.

That's when I thought of Adimuse. The application I have been using since my first classes knows the notes I have mastered. She also knows how to simulate notes on the clarinet, and even on any instrument. All that remained was to graft an ear onto it so that it would be able to validate or not the note I was playing in return. The "ear-and-play" project was born.

 Overview

A specific application, based on the Adimuse software, offers to randomly play notes among the ones I master on the instrument of my choice.

After each note played by the app, I have a certain amount of time to play the same note on my own instrument. If the note is good, it's won. If the note is wrong, I have to play again. If I wait too long, the app moves on to the next note.

To facilitate note detection, I can tune my instrument via the tuner integrated into the application.

The application displays the tessitura (all the notes available on the chosen instrument), and allows me to specify which notes I master (This information comes from the Adimuse application and is shared with all Adimuse applications).

 Objectives

    This application has two objectives:

    • Facilitate the learning of an instrument,
    • Developing the ear.

 Status

 Openings

If the application is operational and has allowed me to make rapid progress, there are some points that I would like to improve:

    • Review the interface to give it a more attractive appearance,
    • Add additional levels of difficulty by guessing intervals and then chords,
    • Adding a progression curve is always nice and encouraging to see your progress.
